Golf Digest is one of the largest media outlets devoted to golf, with eight million monthly unique web visitors, a reach of over 3.6 million for the company’s monthly print publication, and a total audience of almost 19 million across all platforms.

In addition to providing the latest PGA TOUR news, the publication also creates instructional videos, equipment advice, course rankings, travel destinations, online bookings, sports gambling content, podcasts, and more. The brand also boasts some of the most well-known names in the game as playing editors, including chief playing editor Tiger Woods as well as Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Tony Finau, and Hideki Matsuyama.

In 2019, Golf Digest was acquired by Discovery, a premier global media and entertainment company that’s since combined with WarnerMedia to create Warner Bros. Discovery. Discovery had made a number of big moves in the golf media world in a relatively short time; a year prior to the Golf Digest acquisition, it reached a 12-year, $2 billion streaming rights agreement with the PGA TOUR and launched an on-demand global video streaming service called GolfTV. The venture known as Discovery Golf was short-lived, with Discovery executives pulling the plug on the golf-only streaming service less than a year in and noting that “vertical subscription services” were no longer a part of the company’s long-term vision.

Golf Digest was founded in 1950 by William H. Davis, who edited, published and ran the magazine with two of his former Northwestern University classmates before selling to the New York Times in 1967. The publication was then sold to Conde Nast in 2001 before being acquired by Discovery.

One constant over the last four decades has been the leadership of Jerry Tarde, who assumed control as Golf Digest’s top editor in 1984 and continues to remain an instrumental figure for the publication.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

For over 70 years now, Golf Digest has been the preeminent authority on how to play, what to play and where to play. While the shuttering of GOLFTV less than a year into a $2 billion partnership with the PGA Tour was a surprising turn for Discovery’s run in golf, Golf Digest remains one of the most visible and influential properties in the game.

Golf Digest continues to produce a monthly print magazine that shares advice with golfers on the aforementioned how-what-where, along with feature stories on the most compelling personalities and issues within the game. Meanwhile, its website features similar content, along with a mix of news, culture and how-to instruction that have made it a perennial favorite of golf consumers.
