‘Artists of the Game’ Set for Augusta Exhibition

This April, the greatest golfers in the world will again be on display in Augusta, Georgia. So will some of the game’s greatest works of art.

The Academy of Golf Art is marking its 15th anniversary this year with the ‘Artists of the Game’ exhibition at the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta. On display will be a total of 27 works that include sculpture, photography and paintings in oil, pastel, watercolor and casein.

The exhibit starts Feb. 24 and runs through May 13, so the Morris Museum is a great potential addition to the itinerary for anyone – whether fans of golf, the game’s history or art – who will be visiting Augusta the week of the April 2-8 Masters Tournament. The museum is in downtown Augusta, about five miles from Augusta National Golf Club.

“We invite anyone visiting The Masters to take an hour and truly experience the game through our eyes and hands,” said George Lawrence, president of the Academy of Golf Art.

The grandson of Augusta National co-founder Bobby Jones, Dr. Robert Jones IV, will be the featured speaker at the official opening reception for Artists of the Game on March 8. Jones’ presentation will include stories about the founding of Augusta National and the Masters, as well as anecdotes about his father, grandfather and longtime club chairman Clifford Roberts.

Member artists participating in the exhibition include:

• Richard Chorley – Hertfordshire, England
• David Coolidge – Naples, Florida
• Glenn Davis – Hurst, Texas
• Leslie B. DeMille – Sedona, Arizona (deceased, 2017)
• Dom Furore – Traverse City, Michigan
• Linda Hartough – Okatie, South Carolina
• George T. Lawrence Jr. – Westhampton Beach, New York
• Brad Pearson – Holdrege, Nebraska
