Golf course architects through the eras
NGF's facility database contains a vast assortment of information, among them course open dates and architects. The timeline in the accompanying graphic looks at four distinct eras of golf course construction dating back to 1878, with the most prominent architect during each period. (Pre-1920; 1920 to 1944; 1945 to 1979; 1980 to present) The percentage next to the number of courses they built during those eras reflects the proportion of their work relative to the total constructed. (ex: RTJ Sr was responsible for 2% of the more than 5,000 courses opened between 1945-1979, which included the notable golf course "boom" that followed World War II)
