California and Texas lead the nation in total golfers, but they're also the two most populous states by a fairly wide margin (CA - 36.5 million+ and TX - 25.7 million+). Their participation rate actually trails the national average of approximately 8%. By comparison, Midwest states like Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin all not only are rich in golf supply, but they have a participation rate over 11%. Ohio isn't far behind at 10.4%.
