In 2021, total golf supply in the U.S. experienced a net decline of about 1%. There were 130.5 course closures, as measured in 18-hole equivalents -- the 16th straight year the nationwide total has topped 100. In fact, every year since 2006, when the real estate bubble began to deflate and a subprime mortgage crisis followed, the number of annual golf course closures in the U.S. has significantly outpaced new openings.
