Peter Millar was founded in 2001, selling a single cashmere sweater, and has grown into a brand that embodies luxury, elegance, and dedication to superior craftsmanship. Headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, Peter Millar is now known for its premium attire for men, women, and children on and off the golf course.
From the original cashmere sweaters to today’s wide range of casual and dressy apparel, the Peter Millar line embraces classic style with sharp details, superb craftsmanship, and innovative, high-quality materials. Today, the brand has grown to include everything from woven sport shirts, sweaters, and polo shirts, to tailored clothing, outerwear, footwear, cologne, and accessories.
Peter Millar has built a reputation in golf with multiple professionals sporting the brand on the course. Notable names to wear Peter Millar in competition include Kevin Kisner, Cameron Young and Ryan Fox. Other tour members aligned with the brand include Hudson Swofford, Si Woo Kim, Bill Haas and Brandt Snedeker.
With a studio and design center in Raleigh, as well as a business operations center in Durham, North Carolina, Peter Millar is one of today’s fastest growing and most sought-after golf brands in the lifestyle apparel market.
Peter Millar’s meteoric rise in the fashion world drew the attention of Richemont SA, which acquired the company in 2012. Richemont’s portfolio of brands includes luxury brands such as Alfred Dunhill, Cartier, and Montblanc.
In 2018, Peter Millar acquired G/FORE, which originally started with a line of premium golf gloves but has since offered golf shoes, accessories, and apparel for both men and women. G/FORE’s creator, veteran fashion innovator Mossimo Giannulli, describes the brand as luxury sportwear inspired by – and designed for – the sport of golf.
There actually isn’t an actual person named Peter Millar behind the signature brand. Instead, the name was derived from a line of lawn bowling balls from the late 1800’s.
“As a gift from my mother, I received a vintage lawn bowling ball with an inscription that said ‘Peter Millar,’” said Chris Knott, who co-founded the company in 2001 with Greg Oakley and Chet Sikorski. “I felt the name and antique represented an era when people really cared about the impression they were making.”
In a relatively short amount of time, Peter Millar has firmly established its standing as a premium golf brand. The company’s full line of golf apparel and product has been featured on U.S. Ryder Cup and President Cup teams, and has continued to become a more popular option for PGA Tour players.
While many other apparel companies routinely adapt their lines to the sport’s ever-changing trends, Peter Millar has maintained its position as a timeless brand – one that appeals to both younger and older golfers. While other golf brands might gravitate toward a more casual, non-traditional look, Peter Millar has a devoted following for its classic styling.
