The U.S. golf industry has perhaps never been more focused than it is today on making the game approachable and available to all groups of people. Important to this conversation is understanding some of the following data and trends.
Changing U.S. Population
The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 national headcount revealed a more diverse nation than had been expected. These new estimates indicate that roughly four in 10 Americans identify with a racial-ethnic group other than White. They also suggest that the past decade (2010 to 2020) was the first in the nation’s history where the White population declined in numbers.
Accessibility and Affordability
What seems to remain a secret is the broad extent to which golf is an accessible and affordable recreational option for the majority of people. Today, 74% of golf courses nationwide are open to the public, while the average 18-hole greens fee at public courses is about $40 – a favorable rate compared to other leisure activities and experiences that require similar amounts of time, like professional sporting events, theme parks, and more.
